Running and walking are a great combination when it comes to getting some exercise. The reason is because they exercise all the muscles of the human body. Starting off with a walking pace then slowly transitioning into running helps a lot of people stay fit, stay healthy or lose weight. People can go running and walking at a local park, school, around their neighborhood or even at a gym. Although, it is believed that running on a machine at the gym does not have the same effects as running outdoors. It’s still a good option (it’s better than staying home and being a couch potato) but the effects are better when people run and walk freely, without being attached to a machine.

As with anything else, safety comes first. People should take some precautions prior to and when setting-out for a walk or a run. If a person is just beginning to exercise and he wants to do so by running and walking, he needs to start off slow then gradually increase the pace and amount of exercise time. Starting off abruptly can cause damage to the muscles because they haven't gotten used to movement and flexing. If going to exercise outdoors, people should also avoid going by themselves, especially females who can be the target of crimes, and especially at night when it's dark and hard for drivers to see. Plus it's more fun going with someone else. If people do decide to exercise at night be sure to wear bright clothing that can easily be seen by others. Taking safety precautions will avoid any troubles.
