When you see or hear the phrase dog sledding, what image comes to your mind? I think of a group of dogs running through the snow, pulling a sled controlled by an Eskimo. There is a lot of snow on the ground, the weather temperature is very low, perhaps it’s even snowing, the dogs have thick fur, and the sled driver is fully covered in thick coats and clothing which keep him warm.
Dog sledding is used in cold areas as a form of transportation, but in other areas of the world, it is a recreational activity, as well as a sport. In places like Alaska or Antarctica, for example, dog sledding is used by some people to get from one point to another; to get from and to work, or to transport goods. But in Alaska, Antarctica, and other cold places like Colorado or Canada, locals give tourists the opportunity to enjoy a ride on a sled pulled by a group of dogs. Tourists pay a service fee and they can enjoy being pulled through snow trails, while at the same time enjoying nature, interacting with the dogs, seeing and meeting new people and places. Dog sledding is also a sport practiced by many people. Competitions are held in various countries where competitors engage in races and see who reaches the finish line first. No matter what dog sledding is used for though, if there is a good, obedient group of dogs, sledding through the snow is a more pleasant experience. |
