The activity of fishing is practiced by a lot of people worldwide. Some do it for fun or to spend some quality time with a loved one, while other people do as a means to obtain food, and others do it for business (to sell it). People can go fishing in small areas, like ponds, lakes, rivers, or canals. Fishers can use a fishing pole to which bait is attached to a hook at the end, or a net to catch fish. They can also go deep-sea fishing for fun, or they can go out deep into the ocean where they take large boats and catch all kinds of edible species, which are then brought back to land, shipped, and sold. The fish that are caught include tuna, crabs, lobsters, shrimp, oysters, salmon and other types of fish.

Besides being considered a leisure activity, or a commercial business, fishing is also considered a sport. Many competitions are held every year in various parts of the country and the world. Fishers compete to find out who can catch the largest fish, the largest amount of fish, or the rarest species, depending on the competition. The prize the winner receives can be a trophy, money, or other types of awards.
