When you think of football you think food, beer, screaming fans and an amazing sport we all love to watch. The story of football began in the 19th century in England when a soccer player became irritated at the fact that he couldn’t manipulate the ball other than with his feet, so he picked up the ball and ran with it. Even though it was against the rules of soccer, other players found this appealing; this then became the well known sport of rugby. It wasn’t long until the sport became world wide. By the 1800s it found its way to America, Harvard University and Yale University met in Massachusetts in 1876 to formalize the rules that were similar to those in England. The schools decided to change the shape of the ball from round to an egg shape. To finalize the Americanized sport they created an organization, Intercollegiate Football Association.

Historians consider Walter Camp to be the father of modern football, because in 1880 he convinced the IFA to change the rules of the sport that are a lot more similar to the sport we play today. In 1920 more than ten professional football teams were playing in the U.S. they came together in Ohio to form the American Professional Football Association (APFA), and later became the National Football League(NFL), which continued to change many rules of the game, and established itself as an all American past time. It continues to be one of the top sports in America and will keep evolving as time passes to provide Americans and people all over the world with a fun and enjoyable athletic experience.
